Practicing Nail Care the Proper Way

by Jen Hopkins

Since nails are constantly growing, some people tend to neglect their nails. They think that it would eventually grow back so they do not mind if some damage is done to their nails. Unfortunately, most nail damages are very painful, especially if the nails become cracked. Infection of the nails is also a big problem that should be avoided.

Most people know about the basics of nail care such as the trimming of nails and keeping them clean. Even though these are very basic, these still need to be constantly done as neglecting your nails will definitely lead to a lot of different problems in the future such as cracked nails or infections.

There are many do's and don't in nail care, but some people may not realize that they are already violating some of these things. One thing that people do with their nails without realizing that they are already damaging it is the use of nails as tools. Some use their nails to open containers or to screw things on or off. This exposes nails to physical damage which may lead to weaker nails.

Another way in which nails can be damaged is exposing them to chemicals or drying agents such as soap. Dry nails are prone to getting damaged easily so it is best to avoid such substances. Moisturizing nails with hand lotion is also a good practice to do especially after washing your hands.

One part of the nail which should be protected is the area under the cuticle. This is the nail bed where new nail grows so any damage to this part will cause nails to grow badly. A lot of people often push back their cuticles which should not be done at all. It is best to leave the cuticles alone as pushing them back may increase the risk of developing an infection.

One habit that people often do is the pulling of hangnails. This is very dangerous as you cannot control how the nail is pulled. Pulling too much may cause too much of the nail to become unattached. Aside from being very painful, it would be ugly to look at. The skin would also be more exposed to having an infection due to the lost nail on top of it.

Nail polish is also a good way to help protect your nails from getting damaged easily. But this should not be overdone and nails should be allowed to rest at times so that chemicals present in the polish will not cause discoloration or weakening of the nail. It is also best to avoid nail polish with formaldehyde as this is a carcinogen which may cause further complications in the future.

These are just a few simple things that you need to remember when taking care of your nails. It is important that you take care of your nails and be aware with what you are doing with them so that they may stay strong and healthy. For further knowledge about your nails, you may ask a dermatologist as to how to properly care for your nails.
